ABOUT CHARLESTON BRIEFINGS

The Charleston Briefings are a series of short books (12,000 to 20,000 words) on the topic of innovation in the world of libraries and scholarly communication. The default format for the Briefings is an open access, online e-book. We use Michigan Publishing’s e-book hosting platform Fulcrum to provide online access. We will also offer the customer the option to purchase a Kindle, iBook or print-on-demand version.

The audience for the Briefings is the same audience that attends the Charleston Conference: librarians, publishers, entrepreneurs in information technology, vendors and consultants. The series will offer timely, readable, and focused treatments of topics of significance to practitioners in these fields. The purpose of the series is to offer the reader a useful overview that will allow them to engage more effectively with new trends and innovations in their industry.

The Charleston Briefings are the first service being developed under the umbrella of ATG Media that will be in addition to the Charleston Conference and Against the Grain. ATG Media is a wholly owned subsidiary of ATG, LLC.

WHY THE CHARLESTON BRIEFINGS?

“Charleston Briefings: Trending Topics for Information Professionals is a thought-provoking series of brief books concerning innovation in the sphere of libraries, publishing, and technology in scholarly communication. The briefings, growing out of the vital conversations characteristic of the Charleston Conference and Against the Grain, will offer valuable insights into the trends shaping our professional lives and the institutions in which we work.”

Matthew Ismail

Series Editor in Chief, Director of Collection Development, University Libraries Central Michigan University

“So many emerging topics that need to be explored can get lost in the blur of too much.  We wanted a great vehicle for short, pithy, readable discussions of hot topics and innovations.  There are so many exciting developments today.  By offering either open access or inexpensive alternatives for print and ebook formats, we can highlight some of these emerging topics through the considerable expertise of these talented authors while promoting professional growth of our readers.”

Katina Strauch

Publisher & Owner, ATG Media & Charleston Briefings

“Faced with so many changes to their roles and responsibilities, librarians concerned with scholarly communications issues are desperately in need of concise and practical professional development resources. The Charleston Briefings are perfectly adapted to meet our needs and fill a gap in a market dominated by expensive edited volumes and densely written, narrowly-focused journal articles.”

Charles Watkinson

Associate University Librarian, University of Michigan Library

“The opportunity to write a Charleston Briefing has truly been the best of all worlds. It’s allowed me to explore an important topic at length and in-depth, but in a format still accessible to most readers. A Charleston Briefing offers a happy medium between a full-length manuscript and an article, the chance to summarize a key issue in a way hopefully useful to both general and scholarly readers. I heartily recommend that anyone offered the chance to write a Charleston Briefing monograph take full advantage of the opportunity.”

David Durant

Author, Reading in a Digital Age, Collection Development Librarian for Federal Documents & Social Sciences East Carolina University

“Information professionals need concise yet thoughtful overviews of important issues at the intersection of publishing and librarianship. The Charleston Conference has a rich history of bringing these two groups of professionals together, and I’m excited to bring that cross-sector approach to this series. Librarians and publishers have much to learn from one another. I hope that this series, and my book on library publishing in particular, can serve as a catalyst for conversation and collaboration. I particularly value the combination of theoretical grounding with practical guidance that this series promotes.”
