In this post, essayist Lorraine Berry highlights a sensation with which many of us can readily identify. She admits her “visceral pleasure” in owning and being surrounded by more books than she could ever read.
But, it turns out that she is a rank amateur compared to the “pathological book collectors” she goes on to discuss in this fascinating essay. Ms. Berry takes us on an insightful tour of the 19th century world of British “Bibliomania, or Book Madness“ as she describes the Victorian gentlemen’s “obsessive pursuit of books.”
Needless to say, this tour is well worth the price of admission.
