ATG Quirkies: No More Stodgy Crossword Puzzles: the Rise of the Indie Puzzle Builder

newspaper-412452_1280Devotees of the NY Times crossword may not know it but there is a whole world of “indie” crossword puzzles taking the Internet by storm.  According this revealing piece on the website FiveThirtyEight, indie crossword puzzlers are shaking up a very square world.  Indie crossword creators are not constrained by traditional crossword norms and “topics and themes, however recent, modern, niche or profane, are fair game.”

Admittedly the NY Times crossword is still the king of the hill but indie quality is surprisingly high and offers a fun alternative to puzzlers in search of new challenges.
