John Updike didn’t write trashy novels but like the rest of us he had plenty of trash. And oddly, one of his neighbors “surreptitiously collected the writer’s garbage from his curb before the sanitation department got there.”
Why? Well, the unconventional collector, Paul Moran, thought of it as “the other John Updike archive.” And of course, one suspects that he hoped one day he might turn a profit. This post on BiblioBlog reports that Mr. Moran has attempted to do exactly that by putting Updike’s trash on auction. The asking price – $20,000 – $30,000. Did he get it? Scroll down to the “auction update” at the bottom of the post to find out.
