Qur’an collection in a library in Chinguetti.

Inside Chinguetti, the Saharan desert city of libraries is a fascinating photo essay by Michael Huniewicz that reveals a nearly forgotten medieval trading center and its series of incredible libraries of “ancient, leather-bound volumes, elegant books, booklets, and vellums.”

Admittedly, these manuscripts are all that is left of a once “great centre of Islamic scholarship.” Nonetheless, they are a truly remarkable treasure that has been preserved by these ancient Saharan Libraries.

(Thanks, as always, to John Riley of Gabriel Books for providing ATG Quirkies!)
