Back in the day those daring to tell lies to the librarian or showing up with dirty faces didn’t need to apply for a library card at the Hyde Institute Library, Barnet Vale, Hertfordshire. And no drinking, smoking, or coming down with small-pox either!
(According to this post these rules were published in The Singapore Free Press and Mercantile Advertiser, 29 May 1930, Page 11 but it seems that they may have originally appeared in the Western Gazette, Somerset, England, Friday 02 May 1930.)
