The Beloit College “Mindset List” for this year’s entering class of first-year students, the Class of 2018, was just released by editors Ron Nief and Tom McBride.
If you never heard of it, the Mindset List provides a collection of “the cultural touchstones and experiences that have shaped the worldview of students entering colleges and universities in the fall.”
This year’s version has 55 entries that remind us that this year’s crop of freshman was generally born in 1996 and for them getting “good feedback” means getting 30 likes on your last Facebook post in a single afternoon” not to mention that The Daily Show with Jon Stewart has always been the only news program that really “gets it right.”
Tom is originally from Brooklyn N.Y but has spent his entire professional career in South Carolina, most recently as Head of Reference Services at the College of Charleston. As part of the Against the Grain and Charleston Conference team, he serves as the associate editor of the print ATG as well as the co-editor of the webpage. Tom’s conference duties include coordinating the Penthouse Suite interviews as well as the conference poster sessions.
He received his MLS from the University of Buffalo, SUNY and a second master’s in public administration from the College of Charleston and the Univ. of South Carolina. His wife Carol and he live in downtown Charleston and she is an artist and a tour guide offering historic walking tours of the city.
