DESCRIPTION: The Pence Law Library at the Washington College of Law is seeking a Head of Collections & Bibliographic Services Librarian. The successful candidate will manage all aspects of the library’s The successful candidate will coordinate the use of technology for receiving, processing, cataloging, and retrieval of legal information in digital, paper, and other formats. The Pence Law Library’s collections total nearly 600,000 in print and electronic resources. The Pence Law Library uses the Innovative Interfaces Sierra platform. This is a tenure-track position reporting to the Associate Dean for Library and Information Resources.
Besides managing the Collections & Bibliographic Services Department with four (4) full-time and (1) part-time staff and supervising the utilization of metadata schema at the Pence Law Library, this position is responsible for:
- Cataloging materials in all subjects and formats
- Exploring and integrating appropriate emerging technologies into cataloging practices
- Establishing best practices for facilitating discovery and access to all library resources
BASIC FUNCTION: Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Library Services, the Manager of Collection Development oversees the Pearson Library’s print collection as well as manages and coordinates the physical sciences collections (bioengineering, biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, and physics) and the ethnic and gender studies collections (gender & women studies, and global studies). The position develops strategic plans to enhance the quality of the overall collection over time and effectively manages limited physical space in the Pearson Library.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: • Leads collection development activities, updates collection development policy, and subject collection policies. • Leads program efforts critical to the Library’s collection strategies such as: building and stewarding distinctive collections; shifting collecting focus from print to electronic resources; periodic and ongoing review of continuations; designing and implementing standards and methods for selection, de-selection, review and replacement of subject collections. • Conducts collection analysis and evaluates current holdings based on course curricula and class syllabi; collaborates with Information Specialists in analyzing trends in collection use and distribution of funds across academic disciplines. • Effectively selects materials in the assigned subject area to support the curriculum; evaluates gift materials and collections for usefulness; makes decisions for purchase or providing access of collections resources…

Tom is originally from Brooklyn N.Y but has spent his entire professional career in South Carolina, most recently as Head of Reference Services at the College of Charleston. As part of the Against the Grain and Charleston Conference team, he serves as the associate editor of the print ATG as well as the co-editor of the webpage. Tom’s conference duties include coordinating the Penthouse Suite interviews as well as the conference poster sessions.
He received his MLS from the University of Buffalo, SUNY and a second master’s in public administration from the College of Charleston and the Univ. of South Carolina. His wife Carol and he live in downtown Charleston and she is an artist and a tour guide offering historic walking tours of the city.
