Professional Career and Activities: I graduated with my MLIS in 2006 and since that time have been working at the John W. Scott Health Sciences Library at the University of Alberta. I am the liaison to the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences as well as to the Arts & Humanities in Health & Medicine and Medical History programs. I have recently moved into the role of Collections Manager and am looking forward to learning more about this element of library work. I have been active on various library association executives, and am currently on the Editorial board of the Journal of the Canadian Health Libraries Association.
Family: I live with my husband Jason and my two cats, Darwin and Katie.
In My Spare Time: I keep active with various classes including gymnastics and several types of dance.
Favorite Books: Beatrix Potter’s works, the Harry Potter series
Most Memorable Career Achievement: Being granted tenure.
How/Where Do I See the Industry in Five Years: I hope to see more open communication and collaboration among publishers and libraries so that we can work toward keeping price increases at a minimum, thus enabling libraries to continue providing broad ranges of resources to their clientele.
Tom is originally from Brooklyn N.Y but has spent his entire professional career in South Carolina, most recently as Head of Reference Services at the College of Charleston. As part of the Against the Grain and Charleston Conference team, he serves as the associate editor of the print ATG as well as the co-editor of the webpage. Tom’s conference duties include coordinating the Penthouse Suite interviews as well as the conference poster sessions.
He received his MLS from the University of Buffalo, SUNY and a second master’s in public administration from the College of Charleston and the Univ. of South Carolina. His wife Carol and he live in downtown Charleston and she is an artist and a tour guide offering historic walking tours of the city.
